Gamblers Play the Odds at New York’s First Legal Sports Betting Parlor
One of the first legal sports bets made in New York was a $20 gamble on the Seattle Mariners with none other than Assemblyman Gary Pretlow (D-Mount Vernon) standing at the front of the line at Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady.
That venue became the first gambling den in the Empire State to legally accept wagers on sporting events Tuesday.
Pretlow placed his $20 bet on Seattle — only, he said, because the odds on the Yankees game hadn’t been posted yet.
That may be a hint of things to come as nearly all the offshore sportsbooks feature overnight odds.
“This is a big first step for New York,” he said. “It’s a good first step and it’s going to show that sports betting is viable.”
New York will not be offering mobile sports betting any time soon. Lawmakers failed to even get that as part of a ballot initiative Governor Andrew Cuomo sought before giving his blessing.

WSOP Main Event Winner to be Crowned Later Today
From 8,569 entries, now only three are still standing. Only one day remains in the 2019 World Series of Poker Main Event, and Tuesday night a new player will etch his name in poker's history books by becoming World Champion and earning the first-place prize of $10,000,000.
Hossein Ensan has the potential to go wire-to-wire at the final table. He started the final table with the chip lead. And not only has he never relinquished it, he's extended it significantly. He finished Monday night with 326,800,000, and his closest competitor is Alex Livingston with 120,400,000. The other player still in contention is Italian pro Dario Sammartino, who has 67,600,000.

SEC Commissioner Ties Gambling, Mental Health
(Associated Press) - Commissioner Greg Sankey opened Southeastern Conference media days talking about everything from a connection between sports gambling and athletes' mental health to football officiating and the event's future venues.
Sankey says he'd like to see "uniform practices" on college sports gambling in every state and elimination of specific in-game wagers or proposition betting. He also talked about the connection between sports gambling and mental health, with potential extra pressure on a field goal attempt, 3-point shot or ball-strike call.
Sankey also said Monday that trends in mental health should give officials pause before betting on specific college events is legalized.
The commissioner says athletes frequently want to discuss mental health issues and calls this "a wave of new reality, which faces all of us in intercollegiate athletics and higher education."
Officiating was another hot topic. He says officiating crews will visit each football camp for two days during preseason practice, including sitting in for position meetings and discussing rules and techniques with coaches and players.
Sankey also announced that media days will return to Atlanta next year and be held in Nashville for 2021.
