Uruguay Wins Copa Matchup Just as Power Gets Restored to That Country

7:37 pm ET - A massive power outage in Uruguay and Argentina left both countries completely in the dark while the power failure could not have come at a worst time for Uruguay as that country took on Ecuador in the  Copa América.  Uruguay won 3-0.  Fortunately, much of Uruguay's power had been restored ahead of this matchup while 72% of Argentina remained in the dark.  Argentina is also participating in this year's Copa América with many in that country certainly looking forward to Sunday's game between their neighbor and Ecuardor.

An Argentine independent energy expert said that systemic operational and design errors played a role in the power grid’s collapse.

“A localized failure like the one that occurred should be isolated by the same system,” said Raúl Bertero, president of the Center for the Study of Energy Regulatory Activity in Argentina. “The problem is known and technology and studies (exist) to avoid it.”
