Ohio came close to legalizing in-state sportsbooks in 2019 and finally did so this year (2023).
Much of the slow pace had to do with Ohio lawmakers trying to determine who would oversee sports betting in the Buckeye State. Gov. Mike DeWine wanted the Casino Control Commission (CCC) to do so.
Ohio Rep. Dave Greenspan said that was not an option, however.
In an interview with LegalSportsReport, he noted that sports betting is not considered a casino game that would fall under the CCC’s purview.
“I was surprised by the governor’s comments, but we believe our position is the correct position and, as we continue to promote the bill and explain the opinion, we are confident that we will convince him and others why the provisions in the House bill are the correct provisions,” Greenspan said.
In the end, the CCC won out. They ensure the integrity of casino gaming, sports gaming, skill-based amusement machines and fantasy contests by licensing, regulating, investigating and enforcing state laws.
Regardless, there will always be a place for the regional bookie. Licensed regulated sportsbooks will not provide anonymity or a line of credit.
