Well, it’s going to be an interesting time for NASCAR this Sunday. A new race and a new track await drivers when they head south to Florida for the inaugural GoBowling 235. The Daytona International Speedway is the setting, but not the famed 2.5-mile oval. Nope, for the first time drivers will attack the 3.57-mile road course with no practice or qualifying. That means the first laps drivers will take on this track is when the green flag drops.  Bookmaker.eu is offering a generous welcome bonus (max bonus $1000)

Since this is also the first road race of the season it’s hard to handicap with no season data available. Oddsmakers like that Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. each have three wins on road courses since 2017, putting them at the top of the odds board. It’s just driving a car, right? It shouldn’t matter where you’re at. If that’s the case why not back Kevin Harvick? He’s coming off a weekend sweep at Michigan giving him a Cup Series-best six victories this season. NASCAR Cup Series GoBowling 235

Date and Time: Sunday, August 16, 2020, 3 p.m. ET

Location: Daytona International Speedway Road Course, Daytona Beach, FL

Opening NASCAR Odds: Chase Elliott +350

GoBowling 235 TV Coverage: NBC

Like I mentioned earlier this is the first time NASCAR has ever raced on the Daytona road course. And I mean all of NASCAR – Cup Series, Xfinity Series and Truck Series – so there is a lot of unpredictability for this race. What does it all mean? Probably in the grand scheme of things not a whole lot. Oh, there is something to be said about guys on particular tracks, but even that hasn’t meant much this year. Nothing has.

In terms of hot drivers it’s hard to overlook Harvick after sweeping Michigan last weekend. He’s won four of the last nine Cup Series scoots and now leads the circuit with six wins, the second-most he’s ever had in a single season. This might be a good time to back the 55-time Cup Series winner since he’s further down the odds list at +750 than what we typically see.

It’s hard enough to go back-to-back let alone three-peat, which is why I’m a little hesitant to back Harvick. The true road (course) warriors are the two favorites. Elliott has won three times in 10 starts on road tracks, including two in a row. He prevailed last year at Watkins Glen and on the Charlotte Roval. Truex Jr. has four wins overall on road courses his last coming at Sonoma last year. He has three wins and two runner-up finishes while covering every lap of his last seven runs on road courses.

Kyle Busch continues to show up at the top of the odds board despite his season-long win drought. In fact he has just one victory in his 44 starts so I think it’s safe to say there’s more going on than just a slump. He made that one win count, though, leading the pack in last season’s championship race to win the Cup Series.

GoBowling 235 Preview

The course is a wildcard this weekend with everybody getting their first look at the setup. If we’re going to see an upset this is a likely place, so why not take a look down the odds board. Ryan Blaney and Cole Custer have wins this season, but little experience on road courses. Custer, who triumphed at the Quaker State 400 last month, is well down the list at +1250.

Situated in the second wave of betting favorites, Clint Bowyer has some value at +2500 along with positive results on road courses. It could be just what he needs to get rid of the awful stench of his season. He won at Sonoma a few years ago and he has five top-5s in his last eight road course starts. It’s something to think about.

With the entire field in the same position as far as the course goes, they are not equal in terms of cars, crew and experience. That’s why it’s a good move to stick with the favorites for the outright win. Harvick is not only on a heater he’s been good on road courses with a win and 11 top-10s in his last 13 starts on them. Another advantage is that he earned the pole for Sunday’s race.

GoBowling 235 at BookMaker

No matter how good you are it’s just hard to win three consecutive races so I’ll back Harvick in an alternate market. I can see this race coming down to a battle between the two favorites with Elliott making a late charge to take the checkered flag. I know, what fun is it to back the favorite? Well, when he’s been as good on road courses as Elliott, it makes all the difference.

GoBowling 235 Odds Pick: Chase Elliott

Top-5 Lock: Martin Truex Jr.

Top-10 Lock:  Kevin Harvick
