Following an eventful day in Texas the NASCAR Cup Series is back in action mid-week with the revamped schedule taking drivers to Kansas City for the Super Start Batteries 400. The weekly NASCAR odds look familiar for Thursday’s race with Kevin Harvick once again positioned at the top of the list. Harvick has been dominant this season with a huge lead in the Cup Series standings thanks to six straight top-5 finishes that included a pair of wins. Harvick and Denny Hamlin both have a season-high four wins, but Austin had to win in Texas, right? It happened when Austin Dillon outlasted the field to take the checkered flag at last weekend’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 500, his first win of the season and third career. Dillon became the second first-time winner in as many races, joining Cole Custer who led the pack in Kentucky. Despite the wins the two remain low on the odds chart. Chase Elliott (+600), Martin Truex Jr. (+650) and Kyle Busch (+660) are right behind Harvick and the only other drivers with better than 7/1 odds. NASCAR Cup Series Super Start Batteries 400

Date and Time: Thursday, July 23, 2020, 7:30 p.m. ET

Location: Kansas Speedway, Kansas City, KS

Super Start Batteries 400 TV Coverage: NBCSN

Wins by Custer and Dillon turned the Cup Series playoff race upside down. Both drivers were out of the top-16 before their victory, but guaranteed themselves a spot by securing a win. That puts pressure on guys like William Byron, Tyler Reddick, Eric Jones and Bubba Wallace, who are currently the first four out.

The Super Start Batteries 400 will be the third straight race run on an intermediate oval. The 1.5-mile asphalt track at Kansas Speedway is built much like what we saw at the Quaker State 400 and that race could be a preview of what to expect on Thursday night. That was Custer’s last stand when he led for only five laps, including the all-important final one, to nip Martin Truex Jr. by less than three seconds.

This particular race has been run annually since 2011, though Kansas Speedway has been used by NASCAR since it’s opening in 2001. Just like the Texas Motor Speedway last week, Kansas will also host a Round of 8 playoff race in October, the Hollywood Casino 400. Brad Keselowski is the defending champ having won this race twice, the only driver with multiple wins. Harvick and Jimmie Johnson have the most wins on this track among current drivers with three.

It might be too much to ask JJ to add to his win total here. Johnson placed 26th at Texas finishing outside the top-10 for a sixth straight race while extending his winless streak to 112 races. While he does have three wins at Kansas he’s finished 15th or worse in five of his last six starts on this track.

Super Start Batteries 400 Preview

Johnson is set to retire after this season and it looks like he got a head start on those plans. The same can’t be said for Kyle Busch, but the results are just as frustrating. He has yet to win this season; in fact he’s won just once in his last 39 starts, that coming in last year’s final race that earned him the Cup Series championship. If not for that win we’d be talking a lot more about his slump.

Kyle still knows how to win, though. He crossed the finish line ahead of the pack twice last week, though his victory in the Xfinity Series was taken away by a post race disqualification. It’s alarming that he hasn’t won on the Cup Series this season after collecting at least four wins in each of the previous five seasons. Despite his troubles he continues to show up at the top of the odds board, and you expect that drought to end soon.

Finishing among the top-10 in nine of his last 10 starts at Kansas, Kyle should be confident in his driving ability after officially getting credit for a win in last week’s truck series race. We haven’t seen the same driver on the premiere series for whatever reason, and a win is likely to happen at some point, but I just can’t back Busch in this race.

Super Start Batteries 400 at BookMaker

After two surprising winners in the last two events I expect to see things return to normal on Thursday. And by that I mean one of the top drivers will do victory donuts after the race. Who is that exactly? Well, Harvick is a good bet since he’s about the hottest driver around. Chase Elliott isn’t a bad pick and neither is Truex. While he hasn’t come close since winning at Bristol in May, I like how Keselowski handles himself on the Kansas track and I have no problem dropping some coin on him to win this one.

Super Start Batteries 400 Odds Pick: Brad Keselowski
