Fans in the Mile High City aren’t used to seeing their Denver Broncos fail. Entering the 2020 season with three straight losing campaigns for the first time since the early 1970s, there is optimism that things will change. They finished 7-9 last year, their best mark during the slump, and closed by winning four of their last five games. And it finally looks like they have a quarterback after sifting through a number of options following the retirement of Peyton Manning. Drew Lock was under center during that late season surge solidifying his spot as the next signal caller to lead an offense that hasn’t been very good the last few years. If Lock is for real the Broncos could exceed their win total, but that’s a big if.

2020 Denver Broncos Offense Preview
It’s been four years since the Broncos last reached the postseason and plenty of blame can be hurled at the offense. Since winning Super Bowl 50 the Broncos haven’t finished higher than 22nd in scoring while auditioning seven different starting quarterbacks. Joe Flacco wasn’t the answer last season and when the club was 3-8 Lock was given the job. He threw for 1,020 yards with seven touchdowns and the team averaged 21.4 points during the 4-1 stretch. They averaged just 15.6 points through the first 11 contests.
It’s easy to play when there is no pressure, and Lock did that. Now the question is can he do it when the games matter? Lock was given new toys for the offense with receivers Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler to boost a passing game that averaged 194.7 yards per game. Courtland Sutton has big-play capability averaging 15.4 yards per catch a season ago.
The club also brought in former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur to serve as offensive coordinator and aid the development of Lock. A strong ground game will go a long way toward achieving that. Melvin Gordon was signed to work with Philip Lindsay with the hope of improving the NFL’s 20th ranked run game. The pieces are in place for the Broncos to have a much improved offense. Now it’s up to Lock to prove he’s the guy.
2020 Denver Broncos Defense Preview
With Vic Fangio at the helm you’d expect the Broncos to be solid defensively. They had their moments last year allowing 19.8 points, 10th-best in the NFL, and 337 yards to finish 12th while leading the league in red zone touchdown percentage. Seven times they held opponents to less than 20 points losing two of those games. The margin for error was slim with a struggling offense.
There are some changes on this side of the football. Jurrell Casey is an immediate boost to the line so the club shouldn’t be overly concerned about the loss of Derek Wolfe. Chris Harris was replaced in the secondary by A.J. Bouye. The group of linebackers remains intact with Todd Davis and Alexander Johnson leading a surprisingly strong group.
The overall outlook, however, remains tied to the play of Von Miller and Bradley Chubb. Miller had a down year with only eight sacks, his lowest total since 2012, and there is some concern that his career is on the down slope. He’s only 31 so there’s a chance he bounces back. Chubb, meanwhile, is returning from a knee injury that limited him to only four games last season.
2020 Denver Broncos Schedule Analysis
Slow starts have marred the Broncos the last three years; they were 2-6 in the first half in 2019 and 2017 while going 3-5 through the first eight games of the 2018 season. This year has the potential to be more of the same. Denver blanked Tennessee last season before the Titans switched quarterbacks starting an improbable run to the AFC Championship. The teams open in Mile High on Monday Night Football. A trip to Pittsburgh is followed by old friend Tom Brady and the Bucs making the first month interesting to say the least.
The Broncos don’t play an AFC West opponent until hosting Kansas City in Week 7 and there’s a good chance to pick up wins against the rebuilding Chargers and Raiders over the second half. The final six opponents include New Orleans, KC and Buffalo, making games against Carolina, LA and Las Vegas must wins to have a chance of hitting the over.

Getting to .500 requires the Broncos to be more potent offensively. They added speedy receivers, a proven back, and upgraded the line, but how effective they are hinges on the development of Lock. He needs to be as good as or better than he was in his short stint last year. That’s a lot of pressure on the kid. And I’m not convinced the defense is going to be as strong with Miller sliding and Chubb coming off major knee surgery.
