NFL Betting Props – Super Bowl LIV MVP Odds
The Super Bowl is the biggest sporting spectacle on the planet. As a result it also takes in billions of dollars at the betting window. There are reasons for that. The game sits alone on the schedule and with weeks of buildup there is an assortment of proposition bets available from beginning to end. You can wager the over/under on the duration of the national anthem to what color liquid douses the winning coach. There are also the standard spread and total wagers. One popular prop is the game’s MVP, and considering quarterbacks have won the award 29 times in the previous 53 Super Bowls it’s not surprising to see Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo at the top of the odds board at BookMaker.eu with a significant drop after that.

It’s common to see the starting quarterback with the favored team have the shortest odds. Voila, there’s Mahomes at +120 to become yet another QB to win the honor. Mahomes set the bar so high winning the MVP last season that his numbers actually looked bad in 2019. He threw for 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns and the Chiefs averaged nearly 380 yards and over 28 points per game during the regular season. Those numbers were also below 2018 levels, but Mahomes missed a few games with a knee injury.
Once the postseason rolled around Mahomes and the offense picked up the pace. The Chiefs overcame a 24-point deficit in about nine minutes, scored 41 unanswered points, and rolled past Houston, 51-31, in the divisional round. And guess who led the charge? You got it, Mahomes. He tossed five scoring passes in that game and averaged 9.2 yards per attempt. He was pretty good against Tennessee in the AFC Championship with 294 yards and three touchdowns helping the Chiefs overcome a much smaller 17-7 deficit to advance to their first Super Bowl since before the merger.
Garoppolo is second on the odds list, but a player who opened eyes in the NFC title game was Raheem Mostert. It’s hard to win MVP if you don’t compile numbers and I expect Garoppolo to throw the football more than eight times. He won’t have to if they run the ball as well as they did against Green Bay. Mostert got some extra attention after Tevin Coleman exited with a shoulder injury and had a historic afternoon with 220 yards on 29 carries and four touchdowns. He definitely won the NFC Championship Game MVP.
Both tight ends have been a major part of their team’s offense and George Kittle is likely to get targeted if the Niners have difficulty running the football. The Chiefs effectively handled Derrick Henry and took the run game away from the Titans by getting the lead. Kittle was targeted 107 times during the regular season, 26 more than Deebo Samuel. Travis Kelce was KC’s main target during the regular year and he leads all players with three postseason touchdown grabs.
The teams are prolific offensively in their own way. One thing we need to mention is the defense. The Niners had one of the best units during the regular season and the group punished Kirk Cousins in the divisional round win over Minnesota. Again, it comes down to numbers. There’s a reason why only 10 defenders have won the MVP, that’s because they don’t compile enough quantitative stats. Denver’s Von Miller in Super Bowl 50 was last defensive player to win the award when he collected 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and six tackles.
In the history of the Super Bowl we’ve never had a kicker win the MVP. Two of the best will go at it in what should be ideal conditions in South Florida. KC’s Harrison Butker had a NFL-high 34 field goals in 38 attempts and was 45 of 48 on PATs leading everyone during the regular season with 147 points. Gould, meanwhile, is perfect this postseason making all five field goals and seven PATs. The payout is good for both players.
