A move that seemed inconceivable a few years ago recently took place when the Carolina Panthers released Cam Newton, leaving him to shop his services around the National Football League. There aren’t a lot of options for the former MVP who wants to be a starter. Newton has to prove he’s overcome the injuries that have hindered him over the past few seasons, and there are just a few teams in need of a guy like Newton.
Super Bowl LV, conference champion and division odds are available at BookMaker.eu and win totals for every team recently surfaced. Thanks to the NFL the sporting world has something to talk about. Free agency took a good chunk of time, and will continue to do so on a smaller scale with only a few big names still without a team. One of those is Newton and we’ll take a look at where he might end up.
What Team will Cam Newton start the 2020 season with?
Los Angeles Chargers +300
Miami Dolphins +350
Jacksonville Jaguars +350
New England Patriots +450
Washington Redskins +500
The Favorites
We can speculate all day about where Cam is going. The bottom line is that he recently passed a physical and was given a clean bill of health after shoulder and foot injuries hampered his last two seasons. He’s been a starter since joining the NFL as the No. 1 overall in 2011 and with his choice of where to play, the odds favor a team in need of a starter for 2020.
There are a few teams that Newton would be an upgrade for. The current favorite to land him is the Los Angeles Chargers, who have Tyrod Taylor on top of their depth chart following the release of Philip Rivers. Taylor has been a starter in the NFL, but he’s certainly no Newton. And unlike a few other teams on the list, there is no logjam at the position.
While the Miami Dolphins are one of the favored landing spots I don’t see Newton hitting South Beach. The Fins have Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen on the roster, and they have the fifth pick in the upcoming draft with a few talented signal-callers ready to be scooped up. The Dolphins hastened their rebuild with a number of free agent acquisitions and they are in a position to win now, especially with the AFC East looking open now that Tom Brady isn’t in New England.
Will the Jacksonville Jaguars sign a veteran quarterback after recently trading one away? This is an ideal situation for Newton. He can step in and be the starter with Gardner Minshew proving a capable backup. The Nick Foles experiment failed after he was injured in the first game of the 2019 campaign. Minshew played well after taking over the starting gig but, let’s be honest, he was in over his head for the most part.
Going to the Jags makes sense. This is a team searching for an identity and a quality starter after enduring years of Blake Bortles. They can ink Newton to a multi-year deal to ignite the offense with Leonard Fournette and the Jags could be a threat in the AFC South.
With Tom Brady gone the Pats are in need of a starter. New England signed Brian Hoyer to compete with Jarrett Stidham for the spot. That duo doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence for the Pats to continue their dominance. Oh well, even the Roman Empire crumbled. In some ways this makes sense and in others it doesn’t. Newton isn’t the type of player we see on a Bill Belichick-coached team and I don’t think the Pats are willing to pay him the amount of money Newton feels he deserves. On the other hand, the Pats need a proven starter and Newton would bring a different look to an offense that looked stagnant at times under Brady last season.
The Longshots
The Redskins were the other category until acquiring Kyle Allen to reunite with Ron Rivera. The talk prior to that deal was of Newton joining his former coach in our nation’s capital. Now that makes less sense.
Taking a gamble on a veteran a few years ago paid off for the Broncos, who won Super Bowl 50 with Peyton Manning at the helm. There isn’t a lot of experience at the position with Drew Lock slotted at No. 1 after making five starts in his 2019 rookie season. After flaming out with Joe Flacco it looks like the Broncos will stick with their second-round pick after being impressed with his 4-1 record in five starts to close 2019.
Bet Where Cam Newton Will Start the 2020 Season at BookMaker.eu
At this stage of his career Newton doesn’t want to be a backup so there are just a few teams that make sense. The Chargers have pieces in place and wouldn’t Cam be a nice addition for a team looking to win over a market while breaking in a stadium? A lot about going to LA feels right and I’m throwing down on the Bolts making a move to sign Newton.
