In our previous articles we’ve discussed the annual postseason carnage  for pro football coaches.  There have been some interesting twists and turns throughout the process. Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach Doug Marrone found out through the media last Saturday that he would be fired on Monday morning. Inexplicably, Jaguars’ team owner Shahid Khan then reversed course and said that both Marrone and GM Dave Caldwell would be retained for at least another year.  That played havoc with the BetOnline.ag  odds on the number of coaches fired on ‘Black Monday’ along with the rest of the week.  The first two coaches to be dismissed (not counting the fired then not fired Marrone) were Cleveland Browns’ head coach Freddie Kitchens and New York Giants’ head coach Pat Shurmur.  More dismissals were expected as the week progressed but as of Friday the only other coach to meet his demise was the Cowboys’ Garrett.  As of now, Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn is still employed.  Given the premium on high quality head coaches to fill vacancies that strongly suggests he’ll be back next year.

The Washington Redskins have hired former Carolina Panthers field boss Ron Rivera. That leaves four other teams with coaching vacancies and BetOnline.ag has set prop odds on the next coaches for these teams.  In this article we’ll look at the BetOnline.ag propositions for the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

DALLAS COWBOYS NEXT HEAD COACH

In many ways, the BOL odds for the Cowboys’ next head coach are ‘deja vu all over again’. There are several names that have been floated for every team with a vacancy including New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy, Baltimore Ravens OC Greg Roman and former Green Bay Packers’ head coach Mike McCarthy.  There are several assistant coaches in demand including San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh and Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski along with a lesser known name, Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

At the top of the BetOnline.ag odds board for the next Cowboys’ coach is Josh McDaniels at +300.  Clearly, McDaniels has some serious negotiating leverage as he’s not only the favorite for the Cowboys’ job but also the Cleveland Browns vacancy at +200.  Were that not enough in the way of career options for McDaniels, he’s the #2 choice to replace Ron Rivera in Carolina behind Mike McCarthy (+400).  He’s also #3 on the betting board for the next coach of the New York Giants at +600.

The second choice for next Cowboys’ head coach is San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator  Robert Saleh at +400.  Saleh is also on the radar of the Browns and Giants though based on the betting odds these teams have significantly less interest in his services than do the Cowboys.  Next up is University of Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley at +500.  Riley has been a highly sought after college coach for NFL teams with a vacancy but so far he’s shown little interest in leaving Oklahoma.  That could change due to the high profile nature of the Cowboys’ job.  It wouldn’t be the first time that the Cowboys have turned to the Sooners’ program for a head coach.  Dallas tabbed then OU coach Barry Switzer to replace Jimmy Johnson after his acrimonious split with the Cowboys.  Ironically, Johnson had been a head coach at the University of Oklahoma’s in-state rival Oklahoma State University.

Next up, there’s an interesting pair of names at +600.  One is Greg Roman, current Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator.  He’s become a very hot prospect due to his work with presumptive NFL MVP  Lamar Jackson.  Every team with a vacancy has some level of interest in Roman who also has the option of staying where he is and seeing what opportunities present themselves after next season.  The other name at +600 is former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer.  The Carolina Panthers don’t seem to have any interest in Meyer but every other team with a vacancy does.  Considering that Meyer quit his gig at Ohio State due to health issues there’s no guarantee that he’s looking to get back into the coaching ranks and particularly at the NFL level.

UCLA vs. Washington Betting Preview November 15

With a victory over the Bruins, the Huskies would clinch bowl eligibility. This would seem to be the Huskies best shot at securing a postseason berth, with No. 1 ranked Oregon looming in the regular season finale next week.
