Parasite Pays 3-1 Odds in Upset Over 1917
Parasite won the Oscar Sunday night for 2020, beating out favorite 1917. Parasite had been listed at 3/1 odds, 1917 at 5/2.
Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” became the first non-English language film to win best picture in the 92-year history of the Academy Awards. It was also the first Korean film to ever win.
“Parasite” took Hollywood’s top prize on Sunday night, along with awards for best director, best international film and best screenplay. In a year dominated by period epics — “1917,” “Once Upon a Time ... In Hollywood,” “The Irishman” — the film academy instead went overseas, to South Korea, to reward a contemporary and unsettling portrait of social inequality in “Parasite.”
Joon Ho paid 9/4 odds for Best Director as Sam Mendes and his film 1917 mostly got snubbed.
All four of the acting categories featured what was essentially lock.
Best Actor went to Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) at 1/10, Best Actress went to Renee Zellweger (Judy) at 1/7 odds, Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) won Best Supporting Actor at 1/8 odds, and Laura Dern (Marriage Story) had the shortest odds for Best Supporting Actress at 1/6.
