Rhode Island is now offering sports betting, specifically at two designated locations in the smallest US state.
In June, Rhode Island quietly passed a budget that will allow sports betting at Twin River Casino in Tiverton and Lincoln and both were initially expected to open by Oct. 1. This would have allowed the sportsbook to capitalize on a good chunk of the football season. Instead, only the Lincoln property will be taking NFL bets starting Thanksgiving Day. It will be the only sportsbook operating in New England, home of the mighty Patriots. Mobile wagering will only be available via internationally-licensed online sportsbooks.
The legislature projects the new sportsbook will bring in about $23 million in fiscal year 2019.
A statement released by the President of the Senate Dominick J. Ruggerio back in June read:
“This budget includes many Senate priorities, including increased education aid, investment in school buildings, and funding for the care of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities and DCYF. It maintains the progress we have made in lowering taxes to improve our business climate while also investing in economic development, and it provides Rhode Island with the highest percentage of revenue in the nation for sports wagering. This was a collaborative effort among the Senate, House and Governor Raimondo, and I am grateful for their partnership in development of this responsible, compassionate budget.”
Only single game wagering will be permitted, meaning popular parlays will not be available.
Mobile and online gambling is not available via the casino but offshore sportsbooks can be accessed from anywhere within the state.
