In May 2018 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states could begin offering sports betting, including via the Web. While the Oscars may not seem like a sports betting event (and indeed it is not), for years the awards show has been a pivotal part of sportsbook offerings throughout the world. In fact, outside of the U.S. Presidential elections and a handful of other big political events like Brexit, the Oscars has long been the most bet on single day non-sporting event.
Though Michigan does not currently host online gambling sites, residents can access a few dozen international websites to place their Oscar bets.
In 2017, legislation was introduced to amend the state's current gaming control law. Michigan's proposed bill would allow any holder of a casino license to "accept wagers on sporting events." The state's gaming board would be required to "promulgate rules to regulate the conduct of sports betting under this act." The law was approved by Michigan's legislature, but the state's governor vetoed the measure.
