Lawmakers have considered legislation that would enable Louisiana to license and regulate sports betting in-state. None of this is yet to come to fruition, though we should see something emerge in the coming year thanks to a recent voter referendum.
The deep south states that have sports betting currently, do not offer mobile wagering. These include Mississippi, Arkansas and North Carolina. Tennessee is an unusual case study in that they do not offer brick and mortar gambling but now have mobile-only sports betting.
Since the US Supreme Court legalized sports gambling nationwide, individual states have worked hard to amend their own laws. One of the more common trends found with some states is to prohibit wagering on in-state schools and the games they are featured in. That is a trend we are not seeing thus far in the deep South, where college sports are king.
The referendum allowed voters to decide on a simple question: "Would like to legalize sports gambling within your parish". 55 out of the 64 parishes voted yes, making sports gambling possible in those locations. Such an arrangement all but cuts out the ability to offer mobile betting statewide without exposure in a parish that does not want it.
The Louisiana Gaming Control Board power to regulate sports gambling, which probably will not occur until 2022 at the earliest.
