In May 2018 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states could begin offering sports betting, including via the Web.  While the Oscars may not seem like a sports betting event (and indeed it is not), for years the awards show has been a pivotal part of sportsbook offerings throughout the world. In fact, outside of the U.S. Presidential elections and a handful of other big political events like Brexit, the Oscars has long been the most bet on single day non-sporting event.

A proposed law "relating to sports gambling" was introduced January 2018 in Kansas. The bill would have expanded the purview of the Kansas lottery to sports betting involving "one or more competitive games in which amateur or professional athletes participate, or are intended to participate, or on one or more performances of such athletes in such games." Kansas held sports betting hearings in the months before the Supreme Court issued its decision, but took no action afterward. Another bill was introduced January 2019.

A bill was introduced to allow the Oklahoma governor to expand the tribal-state compact and include "sports pools." The expansion would have consisted of "wagering on the outcome of one or more competitive games in which athletes participate, or on one or more performances of such athletes in such games where all bets are placed in a common pool or pot from which all player winnings, prizes and direct costs are paid." The Oklahoma's legislative session ended with no action being taken on its bill.

Oklahoma is a gambling-friendly state with one of the largest casinos in the country along the state border win Texas.

A bill proposed in January 2018 would have allowed casinos and racetracks licensed in Iowa to offer sports betting on-site and possibly online. A February 2018 amendment to the proposed bill included language more favorable to certain sports leagues lobbying in the state. The 2018 Iowa legislative window closed without any vote.

Nebraska has no bill that would authorize sports betting, and by default wagering on the Oscars, at this time.

Despite these scenarios, residents of all three states can still access and bet at international websites offering Oscar wagering.  Some sites do not permit access from Washington State residents as a result of their law.
