Women Who Shot Boyfriend Dead at Illegal Gambling Business Sentenced, Claimed He Was Intruder

A South Wichita woman who fatally shot her boyfriend at an illegal gambling business she operated has been sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison.

She Claimed He Was An Intruder, Surveillance Video Said Otherwise

  • 47-year-old Stacey Jeanie Peters pleaded guilty in June to second-degree murder and commercial gambling.
  • Peters shot and killed her estranged boyfriend, 41-year-old Robert Duvaul.
  • On Nov. 19, 2019, Peters called 911 around 2:33 a.m. and advised the Sedgwick County dispatcher that she “shot somebody that was intruding” and claimed that person had approached her with a gun.
  • Peters had called a friend an hour earlier, however, to advise of the shooting.
  • When police arrived on the scene, Duvaul had already been dead for some time.
  • A witness claimed that Peters said Duvaul accused her of sleeping around.
  • Police removed a firearm from Peters holster upon arriving.

Surveillance video told more of the story of what transpired that fateful evening.

It should Duvaul with his hands up before staggering back and collapsing.

Witnesses told police that the victim was known to carry a gun.

Domestic Violence Plea

  • Peters received a reduced sentence after entering into a domestic violence plea for the homicide.
  • She told police on the scene that Duvaul had threatened to damage the establishment while at least one person advised he had engaged in similar behavior in the past. 
  • The coupld had an on-again-off-again relationship for five years.

 

Peters had reportedly leased the building out for her eBay auction business within 24 hours of the shooting.  Upon further investiation, police learned the premises housed an illegal gambling operation.
