Baltimore followed past stats and trends almost flawlessly in their win against New England in the AFC Championship game.

This was a Ravens team that had beaten New England two out of four games with no loss greater than three points.  Thus, the 8 point underdog status for us looked like taking candy from a baby while an outright win at 3-1 odds looked probable.

The “dead on” trend that went against New England was the 2-16 record for teams after scoring 40 or more points the week prior.  The Patriots were also 2-8 Against The Spread in their last 10 Playoff games heading into Sunday’s showdown.

Now when we look at the Ravens 46ers Super Bowl, there are once again some really solid trends to check out.

Before we go there, however, it should be noted that the oddsmakers were nearly dead on in opening the 2013 Super Bowl line at San Francisco -5.  Gambling911.com reviewed both teams power rankings at the end of the regular season and found that the 49ers should have been -6.  The betting public has since forced oddsmakers to push the line all the way down to -4.  This occurred within a two hour period we should note.

One of the trends we like favoring San Francisco is that they are 16-4 Straight Up when favored by 3.5 to 9.5 points over the past three seasons.  The record is 14-6 ATS.  On the other end of the spectrum, Baltimore is 2-3 Straight Up as an underdog within this same line range.  They are, however, 3-2 ATS.  Going back to 1993, the Ravens are just 16-47 Straight Up when underdogs of between +3.5 and +9.5.

Another trend favoring San Francisco is their ability to play well against non-conference teams.  They are 9-3 both Straight Up and Against The Spread over the past three years when playing a team outside their conference.  15 of their losses over this period were to conference teams.  They went 4-0 Straight Up during the regular season.

While Baltimore has gone 8-4 S.U. vs. non-conference teams over this same period, they are just 6-6 ATS.  The Ravens have gone 2-2 vs. non-conference teams during the 2012 regular season.

We should note that, while Baltimore is once again healthy, they did have some trouble playing against teams with winning records during the regular season.  They were just 5-4 vs. winning teams.  San Francisco was 7-2. Again, there were health/injury issues plaguing Baltimore so this particular trend may not be much of a factor for the 2013 Super Bowl.

Early trends certainly favor San Francisco to cover the spread in the 2013 Super Bowl for those who prefer trend analyses over other more tangible factors.
