A former NBA referee sentenced to prison for gambling on games claims that a White Power gang saved his life while in prison. Tim Donaghy, who served 15 months behind bars, made the stunning revelations this week to TMZ.com.

“It was a matter of me surviving and getting the f–k outta there,” he said.

Donaghy claims to “owe his life” to an inmate he calls “St. Pete”.

“Thank God I teamed up with him. He saved my life. There’s no doubt about it, I never would have survived if it weren’t for St. Pete,” the ex-ref said.

At one point the gang tried to encourage Donaghy to get a tattoo symbolizing his devotion.  Instead, the disgraced ref allowed the group to shave his head for the cause.

It was not immediately clear why Donaghy’s life would have been threatened while in prison though he did referee in a league that is primarily African American.
