Congressman’s Wife Gets 30 Days in Jail For Role In Online Gambling Biz
The wife of Massachusetts Congressman John Tierney was sentenced on Thursday to 30 days behind bars for her involvement with an online gambling enterprise run by her brother Robert Eremian.
Patrice Tierney was charged with aiding and abetting the filing of false tax returns for the Antiguan-based Sports Off Shore (PlayLegal.com) run by her brother since 1996. Between 2003 and 2009, prosecutors alleged that Tierney managed a banking account that collected more than $7 million in illegal gambling profits. They also contended that a portion of Eremian’s business was run out of the state of Massachusetts.
"There must be an actual sanction," US District Judge William G. Young said in reading off her sentence.
Tierney will serve a two-year supervised release, the first five months of which will be under house arrest.
Her husband was re-elected to office this past November.
