German Gambling Laws Violate EU Rules

A European Union high court ruled that Germany’s betting restrictions contravened EU law.

The European Court of Justice declared that the rules for the German state betting monopolies were not “consistent and systemic enough” to uphold the argument that restrictions served to protect the public from gambling addiction, the Financial Times of London reported on Wednesday.

In its ruling, the court said the German monopoly advertised extensively to lure customers, undercutting the argument of the states that their monopolies limited addiction.

Online Gambling In The US: Ladbrokes, William Hill Likely To Lose Out

With the very real possibility that Congressman Barney Frank could lose his chairmanship position should the Republicans take over the House come November, online poker federal legislation must pass prior to Election Day or else there will likely be no “start over” time come 2011.  Ladbrokes, William Hill and other European sports betting ventures itching to get into the U.S. market still may be blocked since Frank’s legislation pertains only to online poker.

Enter the individual states.

Barney Frank Talks Online Poker Legislation With Jay Leno

The poker industry wondered whether an appearance by chairman of the House Financial Services Committee Barney Frank on the Jay Leno Show Tuesday night would provide an opportunity for him to discuss the legalization of online poker.

He didn’t let the industry down.

Said one industry observer:  “I know when most celebs go on to Leno or prime time talk shows they promote their (own) show, or movie…but didn’t it seem like Barney was there to promote internet gambling?
