Las Vegas Economy is Scary

The Las Vegas economy is showing signs of further deterioration, as unemployment continues to climb.

The department's latest data show records of 13.3 percent joblessness statewide and 13.9 percent in Las Vegas in September, and the building sector leads the way in job loss. Contractors added 48,000 jobs statewide from 1997 to 2007, and they've shed 50,000 positions since the recession began in December 2007.

Calling America's Bluff on Internet Gambling

Michael Hiltzik, LA Times

No issue brings out America's talent for self-deception like gambling.

To persuade ourselves that we can keep this particular sin under control, we sequestered casinos in isolated places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City reachable only by superhighways, and isolated them on riverboats where not a single card could be dealt or slot lever pulled until the vessel left the dock.

Happy Bookies Want Yankees – Dodgers Next

By TIM BONTEMPS, NY POST

It's not Yankees-Red Sox, but the Yankees playing the Angels in the American League Championship Series is the next best thing for the Las Vegas sportsbooks.

"With the close proximity of Los Angeles, we have a lot of Angels fans here in Vegas, and any time you get the Yankees, that helps," said Jay Kornegay, director of the Las Vegas Hilton's sportsbook.

Cheats Overtake Mobsters on Vegas Black List

Mobsters and those connected with the mob are now the minority among Las Vegas's infamous casino Black Book.

Of the 21 people banned from Nevada casinos between 1990 and 2000, most had alleged mob connections, according to a report in the Las Vegas Sun. From 2001 to today, only seven names were added to the list, and all except one were casino cheats.

Minnesota Vikings Win Hits Books Hard

A statement win by the Minnesota Vikings against the lowly St. Louis Rams has put quite a dent in the purse strings of online sportsbooks.

With nearly 100 percent of the bets going Minnesota's way on Sunday and the Vikings registering the heaviest betting volume of any team during the early afternoon games, online sportsbooks and Vegas establishments all got hammered.  It's fair to say there were few bookies happy to see Brett Favre back from retirement after Sunday's bloodbath.
