College Basketball Point Shaving Probe Heading for Indictments
Federal investigators from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania have advanced their probe of point shaving and game fixing in college basketball, multiple sources tell Sports Illustrated, conducting interviews with players suspected of manipulating their performances for the benefit of gamblers who wagered on their games. The investigation covers multiple regions and teams, sources say, with a current focus on “Southern schools.”
Sports Illustrated first reported back in February that federal and NCAA authorities were investigating potential links between the gambling ring that ensnared former NBA player Jontay Porter and wagering on at least nine college games across last season and this season.
Porter plead guilty early last month.
"I know what I did was wrong, unlawful, and I am deeply sorry," the former Toronto Raptors center said as he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Prosecutors estimated his sentence at a range from just under 3½ years in prison to a little over four years. Ultimately it will be up to a judge, who could impose anything from no time to 20 years behind bars. Porter also is likely to be assessed hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution and fines.
In a related case, four other men were charged with scheming to profit off tips from an NBA player that he was going to exit two games early.
According to the complaint, one of the four men pressed the player to clear up gambling debts by prematurely pulling out of games so that bets on him underperforming would pay off.
In a message responding to the man's instructions, the player wrote that if he didn't carry out the plan, "u hate me and if I don't get u 8k by Friday you're coming to Toronto to beat me up."
Porter was alleged to have texted a co-conspirator in his gambling case.
According to said documents, Porter would inform one of his co-conspirators of plans to alter his availability and that information was shared with Shane Hennen, who was arrested at a Las Vegas airport back in January while attempting to board a flight en route to Colombia with a stopover in Panama.
Hennen has been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
