Singapore Eases Online Gambling Ban

September 29, 2016 – Singapore plans to allow limited online gambling but under tightly regulated conditions following news that the Ministry of Home Affairs has exempted state-lined Singapore Pools and the Singapore Turf Club from legislation that blocks access to gambling websites.  Sports betting, in particular European football league matches, is especially popular in the nation.

"While our blocking regime is one of the most comprehensive in the world... it is not straightforward to eradicate remote gambling totally," the ministry said.

The Workers Party opposes the granting of exemptions to any organisation to operate remote and online betting services and calls on the government to reject these applications.

Several hundred gambling sites have been blocked since Singapore imposed its ban a year ago.

The nation’s gambling industry is estimated to have raked in SG$500 million the previous year from gambling sites based locally and overseas before being shut down.
