Our friends at BetOnline are back with another unscientific, but fascinating, social media study.  This time geotagged collected from X data for the divisional round of the MLB playoffs shows who fans are rooting for to win the 2024 World Series.

Examples of BetOnline's compiled data includes hashtags like #ForTheFaithful (Padres), #RepBX (Yankees), #RepDetroit (Tigers), #HEYHEYHEYHEY (Royals), #ForTheLand (Guardians), #RedOctober (Phillies), #LGM (Mets), #GoDodgers (Dodgers). Over 110,000 tweets were tracked.

As you can see from the map, fans are rooting for a team that has either never won a World Series, or hasn't won one in a very long time, in the Padres, Tigers, or Guardians.

The Mets are the only team with one state rooting for them, and it’s not New York. It’s Connecticut.

Here is the breakdown:

Guardians:         11 states            (Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia)
Tigers:                10 states            (Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin)
Padres:              9 states              (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Washington, Wyoming.
Royals:              6 states              (Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma)
Dodgers:            5 states              (California, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, Utah)
Yankees:            4 states              (Alaska, Florida, New Jersey, New York)
Phillies:              4 states              (Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia)
Mets:                  1 state                (Connecticut)
