Ken Paxton in a faux spelling bee
  • BetOnline anticipates plenty of betting out of Texas on this week's GOP runoff primary despite Ken Paxton being such a high priced favorite

  • As if the primary weren't going to attract enough bets, this week's Scripps Spelling Bee could also be attractive to Texas gamblers as more Spelling Bee champs come from this state than any other and the reigning champ is from Dallas

GOP Primary Odds or Odd GOP Primary?

We already knew that there would be a high number of wagers coming out of the great state of Texas this week courtesy of the GOP runoff primary between Attorney General Ken Paxton and long time incumbent Senator John Cornyn.

U.S. President Donald Trump's endorsement of Paxton put the final nail in Cornyn's chances of winning re-election, at least that's what the oddsmakers at BetOnline believe.  They've made Paxton a -2500 favorite.

Paxton is widely considered a more flawed candidate than Cornyn, thus prompting oddsmakers to push Senate Democratic candidate James Talarico into favorite status territory at -130.

Paxton was impeached by the Texas House but later acquitted in the Texas Senate after a dramatic trial.  His wife filed for divorce and publicly cited “biblical grounds”.

Yet he is still the -2500 favorite to beat a candidate that many political observers believe would likely beat Talarico.

For those of you who can't stomach placing that $250 bet on Paxton to win $10, you're in luck.  BetOnline has released a number of other wagering opportunities for Tuesday's primary

What's Up With All These Spelling Bee Competitors Emerging Out of Texas?

If you think trying to spell "Talarico' and "Cornyn" is a challenge, try spelling "pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis".  Yeah, it's a word.  And the odds are good a few Texas kids can spell it.

This week, the Scripps National Spelling Bee takes place.

Out of 247 school-age children, there are 23 competitors from Texas, three from the Houston area.

We get that it's the second biggest state in both size and population but that's nearly 10 percent.

It's interesting to note that Texas tends to rank in the middle of the pack nationally on overall education at 25th overall.

The Lone Star State even beat the most populous state of California in terms of Spelling Bee participants.  California is sending just 20 to this year's competition.

You'd think all them bookworms would be coming from Massachusetts, which ranks No. 1 nationally in terms of their education system.  From the publicly listed profiles in this year's Scripps Spelling Bee we could only find FOUR students from Massachusetts.

Faizan Zaki, from the Dallas area, won last year's Spelling Bee.

And, in case you were all wondering, BetOnline WILL BEE (sorry, we're a product of all those corny Busy Bee Travel billboards here in Florida) offering odds on this year's Scripps Spelling Bee.

BetOnline has been taking bets on the Scripps Spelling Bee at least since 2000 (they came online in the summer of 1999).
