It's a story that appeared Monday in Wired.

The Army Recreation Machine Program (ARMP) currently operates 1,889 slot machines in 79 locations abroad, including Korea, Japan, and Germany, according to Neil Gumbs, general manager, Army Recreation Machine Program (ARMP) Installation Management Command (IMCOM). The ARMP brought in $70.9 million from its slot machine operations during the 2024 fiscal year, according to a document obtained by WIRED. That year, the ARMP made $53 million in net proceeds. (The ARMP program covers slots on Army, Navy, and Marine Corps bases, while the Air Force also has their own version of the program.)

Those figures have been increasing. In the fiscal year 2023, the ARMP brought in $64.8 million in revenue, with $48.9 million in net proceeds. The year before, it made $63.1 million in revenue with net proceeds of $47.3 million, according to documents obtained through a public records request made by this reporter through the Data Liberation Project.

From October 2024 to May 2025, the ARMP’s “house” has had some solid wins. They generated about $47.7 million from players in that period, records obtained by WIRED show. Comparatively, the total return to players from October 2024 to May 2025 was about $37 million in reportable jackpots over $1,200.

Illinois Tightens Rules on Gambling Ads, Banning Them From College Campuses

The Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) announced Monday that it would be adopting new rules to expand existing restrictions.

The restrictions mentioned are specifically those that target the advertising, marketing, and promotions for licensed casino, video gaming, and sports wagering operators. This includes a ban on advertising on college campuses and new requirements to protect the public, specifically young people and those with gambling problems.

“By adopting these measures, the IGB is building upon existing regulations to implement additional safeguards and standards that further protect the public and encourage responsible gambling habits,” said IGB Administrator Marcus D. Fruchter. “These regulations provide for clear, consistent, ethical, and transparent advertising and marketing guidelines for all casino, video gaming, and sports wagering operations under IGB jurisdiction.”

ESPN Signs on Influencer Katie Feeney

As part of its commitment to driving growth and innovation across digital and social platforms, ESPN has signed Katie Feeney—a sports and lifestyle content creator with more than 14 million social media followers— to create content across ESPN’s social and digital channels.

The recent college graduate will contribute daily to ESPN’s social and digital efforts, including leading a refreshed approach to SportsCenter on Snapchat, which reaches over 9 million subscribers. In addition, Feeney will deliver vertical short-form video content designed for an enhanced ESPN App experience launching in early fall. Overall, her work will complement ESPN’s existing roster of creators who specialize in real-time, social-native storytelling.

In addition to her role with ESPN Social, Feeney will make appearances on several of ESPN’s premier NFL and college football studio shows, including Sunday NFL Countdown, Monday Night Countdown and College GameDay. Feeney will bring her signature first-person, lifestyle-driven approach – a blend of on-site access, fashion, and culture – to fans.

“From capturing Penn State games on the sidelines to now joining the biggest platform in sports, this journey has been incredible,” said Feeney. “I grew up watching SportsCenter with my family, and I’m proud to now be part of the storytelling that brings ESPN to millions of fans around the world.”

“Katie has built an impressive and authentic connection with sports fans by blending access, personality, and Gen-Z culture in a way that feels fresh and engaging,” said Kaitee Daley, ESPN Senior Vice President, Digital, Social and Streaming Content. “Her perspective and creativity are a perfect match for how we’re reimagining coverage to meet fans where they are, and we can’t wait to see the energy she brings to ESPN’s daily coverage and live event moments.”

She often shares her sports takes and predictions, particularly around major events like the Super Bowl and March Madness. She has a strong connection to Penn State athletics and enjoys sharing her Penn State pride. She also has a passion for basketball and has participated in track events like the Penn Relays.

It's not immediately clear if ESPN will be using Feeney to offer picks.
