The Travers Stakes is one of the most anticipated races of the year leading up to this fall’s Breeders Cup. It features a $1 million purse and is raced on 1 1/4 Miles of dirt.
The race features the best of this year’s 3-year-olds, among them Alpha, who was installed as the 2/1 favorite at Sportsbook.com followed by Street Life at 3/1 and Nonios and Neckn Neck, both at 7/2 early odds.
Alpha finished 12th in the Kentucky Derby but won the Jim Dandy Stakes in his last start on July 28.
Alpha will be ridden by jockey Ramon Dominguez from the number 6 post position.
"I'm very happy with the draw," said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. "I'm not happy with the loading process. I was hoping No. 6 would be the last one in, but No. 11 is the last one in. With the double load, it's 1 and 5, 2 and 6, but it's great to be in the middle of the field."
"(Alpha) is going to put a lot of speed out there," Neck 'n Nick trainer Ian Wilkes said. "The rider has to judge his race. He's got to judge the pace and ride his race. I would like to see a dry track, to be honest. There were no excuses the last time. You have to give (Alpha and Dominguez) all of the accolades. (Neck 'N Neck) has done very well since the Jim Dandy. I'm very pleased with him. He hasn't missed a beat."
NBC televises from 4-6 p.m. EDT Saturday August 25 with post time at 5:46 p.m. EDT.
This is anticipated to be a heavily bet on race.
