Mine That Bird - These Belmont Stakes odds have gotten longer at +140 (a payout of $140 for every $100 bet).  Certainly, this Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness Stakes runner up is the best looking horse coming into this race.  The +140 odds is a far cry from the 100/1 Sports Interaction had offered on Mine That Bird at one point just prior to the Derby.

It's not just the horse that is a factor, but the man riding it.  Jockey Calvin Borel will be looking for his own triple crown, having rode both Mine That Bird and Rachel Alexandra to victory.  He switches back to Mine That Bird now that Rachel Alexandra is out of the race.

Borel had this to say about Mine That Bird. "We're going to win it, no questions asked," he said, after Mine That Bird put in his final bit of work for the Belmont last Monday at Churchill Downs. Although Woolley hasn't gone as far as Borel, he also sounds fairly upbeat. "That's just Calvin--I'm fine with that," said the trainer. I love a man who's confident, and he'll be comfortable when he gets on the horse because he won't be afraid."

Trainer Chip Woolley believed that Mine That Bird was looking better heading into the Belmont than he was entering the Kentucky Derby. "He's looking super," he said. "With his running style, we're going to have to let him run his race. "If we can just be within ten or 12 lengths of them, I'm confident he'll have enough kick left."

Belmont Stakes odds had Charitable Man paying just shy of 3/1 odds (a $100 bet pays $275)  This is the horse a lot of people are picking to win Saturday's race.

Rob Fundter, The Amateur Capper, reporting on behalf of Bloodhorse, was going with Charitable Man.

"I'm going with CHARITABLE MAN, trained by KIARAN McLAUGHLIN who conditioned 2006 winner JAZIL.  Without MINE THAT BIRD, CHARITABLE MAN would have been a heavy favorite.  The $200,000 yearling purchase was a graded stakes winner at two, taking the G.2 Futurity at Belmont Park.  That day he defeated eventual Louisiana Derby winner and starting Kentucky Derby favorite FRIESAN FIRE.  Obviously injured, he was off until contesting the G.1 Blue Grass in April.  The layoff, an outside post, and a wide trip made that effort nothing more than an afternoon workout over Keeneland's Polytrack.

"Last out in the G.2 Peter Pan, CHARITABLE MAN settled nicely behind run-off HELLO BROADWAY (entered in the G.2 Woody Stephens over 7f on the undercard).  He was deftly handled by ALAN GARCIA who allowed his mount's natural speed to put him into winning position on the wide Belmont Park far turn.  A lesser horse, in only his second start of the year, would have bid for the lead and tired.  Not so for the son of 1999 Belmont Stakes winner LEMON DROP KID.  CHARITABLE MAN persevered while tiring at a slower rate than his competition.

"He owns a tactical advantage on every Belmont Stakes contender but does not need the lead to win.  The slower tempo of the 1 ½ mile test of stamina will allow CHARITABLE MAN to use his high cruising speed to be positioned on or just off the lead.  He will use the stamina from his sire to get the final ½ mile to win."

Dunkirk remained in single digit odds, paying $375 for every $100 bet at Sports Interaction.  We can say that's probably no bargain.
