Ed Gray of the Boston Herald on Caracortado:

Caracortado began his career modestly enough, capturing a $40,000 claiming maiden race at the LA County Fair meeting at Fairplex Park. The California-bred gelding went on to win his next four races at Hollwood Park and Santa Anita, his fifth straight victory coming in the Grade 2 Robert Lewis Stakes that stamped him as a legitimate Kentucky Derby prospect.

Yet, after his first loss in the San Felipe Stakes, where he was third, and a subsequent troubled fourth-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby, Caracortado failed to amass enough graded-stakes earnings to be included in the 20-horse Derby field.

"After watching it on TV and with the weather and everything, I wasn't too disappointed. But it would have been nice to go to the Derby. We would have liked to have had enough points to get there, but it wasn't to be," said Don Blahut, an 80-year-old retired businessman who owns Caracortado in partnership with his trainer of 20 years. "We're really not devastated by it. I think this is the race we fit better in of the three races. I think if we have some racing luck, we'll be all right."

How We Follow Horse Racing Has Completely Changed

Horse racing has always been a sport built on routine. Certain days meant certain tracks, the form guide landed when it landed, and if you missed a race, you simply caught up later. Following the sport required a bit of commitment, a bit of patience, and often a bit of guesswork.
