Lookin At Lucky

Lookin At Lucky remained the 2010 Kentucky Derby favorite, but not by a wide margin.  The horse had the most favorable post position following the Wednesday noon announcement.  In the number one spot, 12 horses have won in that position since 1900, more than any other except the number five spot, which is tied for number of wins.

BetUS.com was offering Lookin at Lucky at +350 odds for a payout potential of $35 on every $10 bet.  Those betting the Kentucky Derby tend to average around $10 bets.  Lookin At Lucky had been at +500 odds last week.  Several horses, including the original favorite, have had to be pulled due to injury.

Lookin At Lucky, trained by Bob Baffert, was just a +300 favorite or 3/1 at Churchill Downs Wednesday, which means that BetUS.com was offering better odds.

While Lookin At Lucky enjoyed a good placement statistically, the last competitor to win the opening event of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown from the inside position was Ferdinand in 1986.

"When you get a lemon, you make lemonade," said Lookin At Lucky's owner Mike Pegram. "We're making lemonade in the winner's circle.

On March 13, 2010, Lookin at Lucky made his three year old debut at Oaklawn Park with a win in the Rebel Stakes. But on April 3 he had a horrendous trip under Garrett Gomez in the Santa Anita Derby. Bumped, jostled and virtually ridden into the fence, Lookin at Lucky still managed third.

"You know by the way a horse works if he has a chance in the Derby," said Baffert this past week. "This horse has an excellent chance."

The Kentucky Derby is the single most bet on one day event of the year.  Gambling911.com estimates its site will get close to 7 million hits over the next four days.
