Strait of Dover was the 9/5 favorite with River Rush close at 3/1. Five other contenders had single digit odds of winning this year’s Toronto’s Queen’s Plate.
The Queen's Plate is Canada’s oldest thoroughbred horse race. It is run at a distance of 1¼ miles for 3-year-old thoroughbred horses foaled in Canada at Woodbine in Toronto. For safety reasons, since 1995 the race has been limited to a maximum of 17 starters.
Strait of Dover is the son of English Channel foaled in B.C. and bred to race long.
“The first time we worked him, I came back to the barn and said ‘geez boys, we have a racehorse,’” trainer Danny Vella said of the Queen’s Plate Stakes favorite. “He’s definitely a polytrack horse. (previous trainer Cindy Krasner) did a great job with him. He had no bad habits. He just needed a track he could handle.”
