Verrazano’s triumphs include:

2013 Wood Memorial winner

2013 Tampa Bay Derby winner

Verrazano is one of a handful of Todd Pletcher-trained horses that will be entered into this year’s Derby and Oaks races.

His “favorite” status remained questionable early in the week.

Sure his finish at the Wood Memorial clocked in at 6 2/5 seconds and was among the fastest of any Derby prep race.  Some would argue, however, that his finish was hardly spectacular considering the “crawling” pace.

"I honestly believe he's going to be better in a more truly run race," trainer Todd Pletcher said, "because one of his strengths is he can prompt a fast pace and keep going. What I was happy about was that, even without any pace, he was able to relax and sit in second.

"Johnny (Velazquez) asked him for about three different runs, which it's pretty hard to make three different runs. I think everyone was expecting to see another 10-length victory. That's a little bit unrealistic."
