  • Indiana lawmakers to study legalized sports betting during special summer study commission
  • Two Republican Representatives are hoping to have their bill presented in the next available hearing
  • Bill would include controversial integrity fee

State Rep. Alan Morrison said Tuesday he believes you could legally bet on sports in Indiana sooner than you think with businesses operating from within the state's borders.  Currently sports betting in the state is only available via licensed international online gambling sites.

Lawmakers were set to study the possibilities during a summer study commission session over the next two months.

Morrison, a Republican from Brazil, Indiana, said he and State Rep. Jon Ford, a Terre Haute Republican, are trying again after their initial bill failed to get a hearing prior to the legislative year-end recess.

Morrison said, "What we're trying to do is put together something that is good for Indiana, good for Hoosiers."

Morrison said he plans on his bill covering game integrity so people who bet know the game they're betting on is legit. His bill would also allow mobile sports betting.  The integrity fee, in particular, has been met with a good deal of controversy since the US Supreme Court ruled against decades long prohibition of sports wagering.

"It would be pretty important, moving forward with this, that we recognize the importance of mobile gaming and how it could really increase the revenue. Not only back to the state, but more importantly, back to our different (gaming) properties," Morrison said.

Neighboring Ohio is also seriously considering legalization sports betting in that state.
