Unscientific Twitter Study Finds MLB Fans Want an Underdog to Win World Series This Year
A recent Twitter study shows that the majority of America wants an underdog-type story to play out for the World Series rather than a blue-chip baseball club (Astros, Dodgers, Phillies, Braves) taking home another championship.
Since each of the Division Series were set, our social squad tracked geo-tagged Twitter data, including tweets, hashtags and direct keyword phrases for each team in every state.
For example, official fan hashtags such as #BirdLand (Orioles), #AsOneATL (Braves) and #Ready2Reign (Astros) were compiled for the dataset.
More than 150,000 tweets were analyzed in total over the last 24 hours.
The results produced a “rooting for” favorite...the Baltimore Orioles. The O's were one of the worst teams in baseball for nearly a decade, but entered this postseason as the No. 1 seed in the American League.
Still, Baltimore's odds to advance from their series against Texas are the shortest of the four, so the sensational season doesn't mean much at this point.
But as you can see from the map, the Orioles will have the support of 13 states outside of Maryland.
State breakdown:
Orioles - 14 states
Braves - 11 states
Dodgers - 10 states
Twins - 7 states
Phillies - 3 states
Astros - 3 states
Rangers - 1 state
Diamondbacks - 1 state
