More and more, it is beginning to appear that land based casinos in the United States firmly believe that they know something the rest of the general public doesn’t. In late breaking news, it is being reported that Foxwood’s hotel and casino, the largest casino in the northeastern part of the United States, and one of the largest casinos in the United States period has decided to take the initiative and, with its entertainment and television partners, is branching out into the online gaming realm.

As everyone knows, about 5 years ago, the controversial Unlawful Internet Gaming and Enforcement Act was passed as part of Port Security Act without any debate on the Senate floor. The bill essentially changed the landscape of online poker as we know it. Over the past several months, several Congressional leaders, including Barney Frank of Massachusetts have made great strides in trying to repeal the act and subsequently legalize and regulate the industry. His efforts have thus far made progress in doing just that.

Since then, several high visibility and powerful land-based casino operators have been positioning themselves to be ready when these changes go into effect at a yet to be determined date, among them some of the larger Las Vegas conglomerates. Now it seems, Foxwoods is taking steps as well, partnering with Goodson Gaming to get their hats in the ring.

In a prepared press release, Gary Armentrout, Foxwoods Development’s President said:

“Velocity Gaming brings together industry leaders in casino gaming, television game show production, and global lotteries in order to produce an unparalleled combination that will generate product awareness, drive incremental game play, and create new and exciting customer experiences in the interactive gaming world.”

These words sure sound like someone who is preparing to seriously enter the online gaming world and they are coming from someone whose television credits include shows like “Double Dare” and “Card Sharks” to name a couple.

Currently, Foxwoods is the home of an annual World Poker Tour event and is one of the most successful poker rooms in the United States. The brand name alone seemingly gives it instant credibility should the online gaming and online poker industry open up in the future as anticipated.
