A Reno, Nevada man has been sentenced to life for killing his estranged wife after she called him a “coward” for gambling their life savings away.
Washoe County District Judge Patrick Flanagan imposed the sentence Friday on Samuel Kung. He’s be eligible for parole in ten more years.
Kung, 55, killed his 53-year-old wife, Gina Lew, in the couple’s bedroom.
"This will haunt you every day of your life," Flanagan told Kung.
Kung strangled his wife last June. He claimed to have been hiding a $20,000 gambling debt from his wife, who worked two jobs supporting the unemployed Kung.
According to the Associated Press, police say Kung was heavily involved in high-stakes poker and his gambling left him reliant on payday loans and borrowing money from Lew's elderly parents.
On June 9, Kung told a Reno Police Department receptionist he needed to speak to a detective right away."I murdered my wife," he told a detective in the station lobby. "I've done something bad, and I need to be punished."
