If you have been following the start of the 2011 NBA Playoffs this weekend, you’ll notice a trend that is leading to significant wins for the bookies and making a few “dog” bettors rich, at least for the moment.
The dogs have been killing it!
On Saturday, Chicago beat Indiana, but not by the double digit spread.
Miami beat Philadelphia by an even larger margin, but ultimately came short of covering.
The favored Magic not only failed to cover, the underdog Atlanta Hawks managed to win outright.
The one exception Saturday, Dallas did cover the 5-point spread vs. Portland.
On Sunday the trend continued for dog bettors.
The Memphis Grizzlies enjoyed their first ever post season win by knocking off the team with NBA’s second best record, San Antonio. Memphis was 0-12 in their previous Playoffs appearances.
"It's nice from an annoyance perspective to have it out of the way, because I don't have to answer questions about being 0 and 13," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said.
So playoff inexperienced are the Grizzlies that Hollins had never coached in the postseason before Sunday, and eight of his players lacked any playoff experience, the Associated Press noted.
"It was awesome. I'm really happy for the city," Memphis Shane Battier said. "Beale Street will be a fun place tonight. Most of these guys don't know the history or the heartache that the city has gone through. I'm happy for the city."
Later, the underdog Hornets rallied to beat heavily favored Los Angeles.
The Lakers lost by 100-109.
"Our defense, I thought, was late," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I think we were late on everything. They were the aggressors, and they stayed aggressive. ... I think they respect the Hornets. I just don't think they were keyed in on what they have to do."
