2011 Triple Crown Odds

Heading into the Kentucky Derby, Sportsbook.com posted odds on the 2011 Triple Crown and whether a horse would win all three races:  The Derby, The Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

This becomes a popular proposition bet usually after the Kentucky Derby and the two weeks leading up to The Preakness.  Of course, once a horse wins the Derby, he or she immediately becomes a star capable of winning all three races.

There is one problem:  It rarely happens.  And no horse has won the Triple Crown since 1978 when Affirmed shocked the world. The great-great-grandson of Triple Crown winner War Admiral, Affirmed was the second choice to win that year’s Kentucky Derby at 9-5.

The odds of there being a Triple Crown in 2011 were at 7/1 at Sportsbook.com.  Don’t even bother betting the NO, which was listed at -1100.   To be perfectly frank, most people do not bet on there NOT being a Triple Crown.  Everybody wants there to be.
