BetOnSports Customers Receive Measly 4.6 Percent Payment After Five Years
Customers of BetOnSports have finally been paid, but it’s not all good news. The settlement turns out to have been a paltry 4.6 percent for at least one customer who filed a claim with the US Government. To put this in perspective, if someone was owed $1000 from BetOnSports, they would be receiving just under $50.
A member of the SBR Forum announced the news today.
Affected players were asked to make the claims following an indictment and subsequent closure of the company in July of 2006. Nearly a dozen executives and high level employees with what was once the largest North American-facing online and call center sports betting company were charged with tax evasion and violation of gambling laws along with money laundering.
BetOnSports founder Gary Kaplan and former CEO David Carruthers have been serving prison time.
The company’s ghosts are starting to resurface as part of an Eastern Pennsylvania US Attorney’s investigation into former Nylon Magazine publisher Don Hellinger. A grand jury investigation revealed that Hellinger had processed payments for BetOnSports the year prior to its shutdown. Prosecutors are determined to take down Hellinger on the gambling charges, Gambling911.com sources familiar with the case insist.
