Appearing on Quadjacks Radio this past week, the self-proclaimed “Poker Brat” Phil Hellmuth discussed the drug Adderall and how it can be affective when playing poker.

Adderall, a brand name of amphetamine salts-based medication used for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy, directly affects the mesolimbic reward pathway in the brain. Amphetamine salts preparations are considered to have high abuse potential.  It is widely used as a “study drug” at many universities as it reportedly helps to focus energy and concentration to a much higher level than normal

“If you are going to use it occasionally, there are ways to control your thoughts,” Hellmuth said during an interview with Quadjacks Radio.  “Especially when there is a lot of money on the line.”

During the interview it was claimed that poker players who took Speed over a period of 8 months ended up winning over a million dollars but eventually they lost it all back after the drug stopped working.

Hellmuth noted that most drugs, including alcohol, typically lead to dependency.  Drinking and playing poker, for example, could have an adverse effect on one’s game.

Hellmuth stopped drinking while playing poker in 1994.

Video starts off with an interview with poker pro Maria Ho.
