Gemologist had Kentucky Derby odds that have not moved off the 6-1 since the morning line was posted on Wednesday.  He comes into the Derby unbeaten with two of his wins at Churchill Downs and could end up racing on the mud with a 50 percent chance of rain throughout Saturday afternoon.  Gemologist has already proven he is among the better mud horses.

Not only does he have an unblemished record, Gemologist is also trained by Derby ace Todd Pletcher.

“To me, he’s been Mr. Consistency so far,” Pletcher said.

Some believe he should be the favorite.  At 6-1 odds, Gemologist is a steal!

Others argue that Gemologist has raced against weak competition, the likes of Optimizer, a horse that fell apart against Derby favorite Union Rags.

WinStar Farm president Elliott Walden told the Associated Press he’s not concerned about a lack of respect for the Tiznow colt.
“He’s undefeated. That’s special in and of itself,” Walden said. “That could change, obviously, this is the toughest race he’s going to be in and every race up to this has been a stepping stone where horses have been separated by region mainly and you bring them all together and it creates that ‘cream of the cream’ and we’ll see what happens Saturday.”

Should it rain, Gemologist will still be up against stiff competition as the two favorites, Union Rags and Bodemeister, have also demonstrated they can run in the muck.
