Odds to Win 2012 Travers Stakes Still Have Alpha Favored: Payout 2-1
Odds to win the 2012 Travers Stakes haven’t changed since the prices were posted on Wednesday at Sportsbook.com that have Alpha as a 2-1 favorite and Street Life at 3/1.
Gambling911.com noted that early interest in this year’s Travers Stakes is somewhat diminished compared to periods past due to a less-than-stellar field. A handful of early favorites such as Union Rags, Bodemeister and Preakness Stakes winner I’ll Have Another have since dropped out.
Hansen, last year's 2-year-old champion expected to set the pace, has also been scratched from Saturday’s race due to a torn tendon in his left front leg.
Golden Ticket trainer Ken McPeeks sees this as a golden opportunity with a number of long shots having a chance to pay out big, including Golden Ticket at 15/1.
'He's worked as good as I've ever had a horse work at the training track here,'' McPeek said, ''and he's a horse sitting on tilt. We kind of feel there's a chance for him.''
The Travers traditionally features the best in the horse racing world vying for the 3-year-old championship and sometimes the Horse of the Year honors. That won’t be happening this year.
