Attorney and Vice President and Board Member at Nevada Council on Problem Gambling, Anthony Cabot, on Tuesday, cast a pessimistic outlook for legalized Internet gambling in the US while taking a specific swipe at New Jersey.

The Garden State legislatures passed a bill that would make online gambling in New Jersey legal should Governor Chris Christie elect to sign the measure into law.

“You can be sure that hackers, cheats and scoundrels will try to hack the system,” Cabot said. “There will be persons trying to defeat the verification systems. They’ll find the weakest of the jurisdictions and compromise those jurisdictions.”

“Even the most experienced people are not completely ready to regulate online play,” Cabot said. “You will need at least a year before a regulatory body can competently regulate it. If New Jersey thinks they can do it in three months, they’re kidding themselves.”

Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association Head Joe Brennan, who has spearheaded efforts to legalize Web gambling in New Jersey, reacted to Cabot’s remarks.

“It's not likely that New Jersey regulators have just begun to look at Internet gaming,” Brennan, Jr. told Gambling911.com.  “This is not a surprise for them, and they already deal with technology testing and approvals.”
