Ang Lee Best Director Win Biggest Upset in Oscar History

With Ang Lee winning the Best Director award at this year’s Oscars for “Life of Pi”, we witnessed the biggest upset since online bookmakers began taking bets on the Oscars during the late 1990’s.

Stephen Spielberg was a pretty big favorite to win as Best Director.

Lee paid 5/1 odds at a number of online gambling sites.  Lee previously won for Best Director with the 2005 film “Brokeback Mountain”.

“It’s a miracle that I could make this movie,” Lee said. “I carried the anxiety for a very long time, four years. It’s a philosophical book and expensive movie, a scary combination.”

Oscars also had its third tie in history with Best Sound Editing going to both “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Skyfall”.  A tie is declared if the voting margin hits between three in a specific category.

In 1969, Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand tied for Best Actress for their roles in “The Lion in Winter” and “Funny Girl” respectively.

In 1932, Fredric March and Wallace Beery tied for Best Actor.  March did have one more vote than Beery.
