Kentucky Derby Draw – Post Positions and Betting Odds 2014

The Kentucky Derby Draw took place Wednesday evening. Post positions play a major role in creating the lines. This is a random draw. No strategy is involved.

Horses earn points based on certain designated races. Pablo Del Monte is on standby and can only enter this year’s Derby if another horse drops out.

The number one post has done well in the past but is often dreaded as it is considered among the trickiest. Horses tend to get more anxious in this spot. Eight of eleven of the last horses that started from the number one position have finished better than their posted odds and only Looking At Lucky had any adverse reaction to the number one spot.

Trainer Bob Baffert says that winners from this position were all from “back in the 1920’s”.

Vicars In Trouble, initially listed at 25/1, drew the dreaded number 1 post. He is a good horse coming from behind so this post might not matter too much but his name may need to be chnaged to "Vicars IS In Trouble nonetheless if we are to listen to all the pundits.

Post position is the number appearing before the horse's name.

5 - California Chrome +225 - Good inside post. He had this spot in the Santa Anita Derby, which he won.

20 - Wicked Strong +550

11 - Hoppertunity 7/1 - Considered a decent position, somewhere in the middle.

16 - Intense Holiday 11/1

4 - Danza 11/1 (was at 40/1 entering the Arkansas Derby)

6 - Samraat 15/1

19 - Ride On Curlin 16/1 - A spot that has yielded one winner since 1930.

10 - Wildcat Red 16/1 - This is the winningest spot since 1930. Expect odds to get shorter.

18 Candy Boy 20/1

12 Dance With Fate 20/1

15 Tapiture 25/1
