Moreno is a speed horse that will get off to an early lead. While being penalized in the G1 Jockey Cup Gold, Moreno has finished in the top two in his previous three races, all graded. These include a win at the Whitney Handicap.
Distance could prove a problem for Moreno as he is yet to win a race at 10 furlongs.
He competed in the Classic last year, but tired badly to finish 10th after pressing the early pace.
Javier Castellano, the leading rider in the country, has replaced Moreno’s former jockey, Junior Alvarado. Castellano’s stalking style could prove rewarding for Moreno.
The change occurred just a few weeks ago following Moreno’s bad loss at the Jockey Club Gold due to an accident caused by Alvarado after taking a sharp left turn. Moreno was clipped in the heels by Wicked Strong. Rajiv Maragh was thrown off of Wicked Strong and suffered a broken arm as a result.
