Adam Meyer, the self-professed “Gambling Guru to the Stars”, is seeking a new attorney.

Meyer was charged late last year with running an elaborate sports handicapping fraud scheme whereby he attempted to extort $25 million from a Wisconsin businessman.

The scheme went something like this: Meyer told his Wisconsin client, Gary Sadoff, that he owed a debt to a ruthless bookie named Kent Wong and that Wong mistook the Wisconsin man for Meyer’s partner.

That ruthless bookie turned out to be Meyer himself.  The indictment alleges that Meyer would call Sadoff and threaten him into making further payments.

Each of the wire fraud counts and the extortion count carries a sentence of 20 years in prison.  Meyer also faces two counts of drug possession with intent to sell.

In recent days, it was revealed that Meyer had fired his long time attorney Joel Hirschhorn, someone who had planned to attempt to demonstrate Meyer was insane.  Hirschhorn was replaced by Milwaukee lawyers Robin Shellow and Christopher Donovan.  That didn’t last long however.

On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Lynn Adelman approved Meyer's request to replace Shellow and Donovan with Milwaukee criminal defense attorney Dennis Coffey.

Meyer awaits trial in a Kenosha County jail after his bail was revoked for failing to maintain his sobriety.
