It used to be that the online gambling websites wouldn't offer betting odds until after the post up positions were announced for the Kentucky Derby.  Even up until last year, nearly half the Internet sites out there didn't even offer odds on the Derby.

2009 is already turning into a different story.

"Operators are now being educated by Gambling911.com as to the importance of the Kentucky Derby," says Payton O'Brien, Senior Editor of G911.com.  "Last year we registered more traffic for the Derby than we did the Super Bowl."

It remains to be seen whether the 2009 Kentucky Derby will surpass traffic witnessed during the Super Bowl last February, which was a record breaker for Gambling911.com.

The secret to successful early 2009 Kentucky Derby betting is to shop for the best lines available.

"This is easier now since most of our sponsors are offering early odds," O'Brien points out.

I Want Revenge was the favorite to win this year's Derby.  The best payout on this horse came in at $350 at Bookmaker.com.

Here were the other early single digit favorites and the best prices we could find:

Friesan Fire: $800 for every $100 bet at Sportsinteraction.com.

Quality Road: $600 for every $100 bet at SBG Global.

Dunkirk: $500 for every $100 bet everywhere.

Pioneer of the Nile:  $700 for every $100 bet at SBG Global.

"Papa Clem is likely to be posted with single digit odds heading into next weekend," O'Brien said.  At this time oddsmakers had the horse at +1200 or longer odds.  The best payout was $1600 for every $100 bet at Sportsinteraction.com.

How We Follow Horse Racing Has Completely Changed

Horse racing has always been a sport built on routine. Certain days meant certain tracks, the form guide landed when it landed, and if you missed a race, you simply caught up later. Following the sport required a bit of commitment, a bit of patience, and often a bit of guesswork.
