Kentucky Derby Post Position Draw

With ESPN opting out of the live broadcast for the 2009 Kentucky Derby post position draw, Churchill Downs had moved the even up to noon Wednesday.   While not open to the public, the post position draw was televised by WAVE-3 and HRTV and live-streamed by courier-journal.com.

"There is going to be a lot of confusion over this decision," says Payton O'Brien.  "Quite a few people will be looking to tune into the draw around 6 pm EST on ESPN.  I don't think this is widely known about the noon move."

The past several years the event was in the evening at Fourth Street Live! and open to the public.

Immediately following the 2009 Kentucky Derby post position draw announcement, Gambling911.com anticipated a large volume of traffic looking for online sportsbooks (racebooks) in which to place their Kentucky Derby future bets (most of the sportsbooks found here will be offering updated odds on the 2009 Kentucky Derby by late Wednesday afternoon or evening).

"In many ways, the Derby is much like March Madness in that there is a sudden mad frenzy to place bets immediately following the Selection Sunday Show," says O'Brien.  "In this case, it's the Post Position Draw.  But this year we don't see a sudden influx of betting immediately following the noon hour since the results will be hard to come by and many people won't be expecting them so early."

The Gambling911.com did, however, see a pretty substantial influx of traffic following the announcement.

Here were the 20 post positions:

1. West Side Bernie (Stewart Elliott, Kelly Breen), 30-1

2. Musket Man (Eibar Coa, Derek Ryan), 20-1
