Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko will battle on April 29th in London for Joshua’s IBF title and the vacant WBA and IBO heavyweight titles. Joshua comes into this fight unbeaten at 18-0 with 18 knockouts, while Klitschko is 64-4 with 53 knockouts. Joshua is listed as about a 2-1 favorite in a fight that is not expected to go the full 12 rounds with the rounds option listed at 8.5.
Anthony Joshua (18-0, 18 KO’s)
Joshua won the IBF title in April of last year, as he defeated Charles Martin. He defended the title twice, as he beat Dominic Breazeale in June of last year and Eric Molina in December of last year. Joshua has fought at Wembley before, as he was on the undercard of Froch vs. Groves in 2014.
Joshua is well aware of the big setting and that he is facing a legend in Klitschko. "I know I'm going to be facing the best Wladimir," Joshua said, "I think the time is right. It may seem soon to people. This is my gold medal fight once again.” Joshua said he won’t do anything different to prepare for this fight. "I'm here for a reason. I'll handle business the way I've always handled it. The goal is the same - to be victorious."
Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KO’s)
Klitschko is coming off his first loss in more than a decade, as he was beaten by Tyson Fury in November of 2015. Klitschko is now 41 years old so there are definitely questions as to whether or not Klitschko has enough to handle the younger and more powerful Joshua.
Klitschko has not fought in well over a year so ring rust is also a concern. This fight is a chance for Klitschko to reclaim the heavyweight title and he will be fighting in front of a large crowd at Wembley. “This is one of the biggest challenges I’ve had in my life – coming back after an 18-month break and fighting a young champion, really talented, athletic and all of this.” Klitschko said, “I’m the underdog in this fight and this is actually exciting for me. I haven’t been in this situation for such a long time. I feel young and challenged. I want to leave the ring as the champion and the winner of this fight – that’s my obsession. I’m obsessed about it.”
Klitschko said he is not worried about his age or the age of his opponent. “I’m turning my face to a challenge. Many people think I’m crazy – I’m going to be 41 and I’m fighting a guy much younger, so strong, scary, knocks everybody out.”
This fight is expected to have 90,000 in attendance at Wembley as the mayor of London said that the stadium will be expanded by 10,000 for this fight.
