The Dubs did awaken with huge road wins over Houston and OKC to reestablish their dominance and they visit the surging San Antonio Spurs on Monday.

Even the best teams experience some difficult times over the course of a long season. It’s just a little more noticeable when it’s the Warriors. A home loss to the Suns, yes the Suns, punctuated a stretch that saw the defending champs go 3-5. The Dubs also fell to Miami, Orlando, and to Boston by 33 points during the skid. But it was the Phoenix game that grabbed the attention of the team. Regaining their focus, the Dubs went into Houston and defeated the Rockets, playing as an underdog for the first time since December. They followed that with a masterpiece to knock off OKC on Saturday.
The Spurs have been focused on winning over the last few weeks, putting a streak of eight straight together. San Antonio was left for dead after the annual rodeo road trip produced a 1-7 record and questions whether the Spurs were a playoff team. Their response has been an emphatic yes. And they’ve been doing it with a defensive effort that would make Billy Paultz proud. The Spurs have allowed more than 105 points just once during their streak while cashing the under seven times, including three in a row.
Warriors
No Kevin Durant, no problem. KD missed his return to OKC, sitting out his second straight game with a bum ankle. The Dubs went and won both games, ending Houston’s nine-game winning streak behind 27 points from DeMarcus Cousins. Following that victory with another impressive showing, the Dubs stymied the Thunder, 110-88, on Saturday. All this came immediately after a stunning home loss to Phoenix where the Warriors squandered a 16-point first half lead to the worst team in the Western Conference.
“I think the loss to Phoenix opened our eyes a little bit,” Kerr said after the OKC game. “Our guys just felt threatened on the road. Anytime they’re threatened I think they tend to play better.” Stephen Curry dropped 33 on the Thunder and the Warriors put together two of their best games without Durant. KD is expected back against the Spurs, but Cousins is questionable with a foot injury. Boogie hasn’t played both ends of a back-to-back since returning and the Dubs finish the road trip in Minnesota on Tuesday.
Spurs
The big three are no longer around, but that hasn’t stopped the Spurs from setting their sights on the playoffs. It’s been over two decades since the NBA had a postseason that did not include the Spurs, and this group isn’t going to be the one that ends that run. The Spurs are the hottest team in the NBA having won eight straight to put some distance between themselves and the pack below them. They are also looking at moving up in the standings. Currently in the No. 6 slot, the Spurs are just 1.5 games behind fourth-place Portland.
Defense has been a major reason for San Antonio’s renaissance. Following a 130-118 loss to the Knicks last month at the tail end of their road trip, Gregg Popovich called his team’s defensive performance “pathetic.” I guess they got the message. In nine games since the Spurs are allowing just over 100 points per game and only one opponent has scored more than 105 points.

We’ve seen both teams lock down defensively and that’s going to prevent this game from reaching the over. And the Warriors have picked up their effort on this road trip, resulting in wins over Houston and OKC. They are expected to have Durant back for this one, too. The Spurs remember what happened the last time they faced the Dubs. Without LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan, they were ambushed in Oracle 141-102. Those two will play and the Spurs have a nice run of 10 straight wins at home, giving them the upper hand in this one.
